Betty Sue Bell

Betty Sue Rowlett Bell, 93, of Mohave Valley, AZ, entered eternity at her home August 3, 2026. Betty was born in Dillard, Oklahoma on October 31, 1932 to Henry Alvin “H.A.” and Minnie Sue (Hunziker) Rowlett. Her father worked as a roustabout in the oil fields of East Texas and Southern Louisiana during the 1930’s; and became a minister with the Assemblies of God. Betty remembered that every time they moved, her father would find a vacant store front or ask for a room at a school where he would conduct church services. H.A. said “any big church can always get a pastor; I want to start churches where there isn’t one.” Betty experienced the financial struggles of her father working manual labor to support his family while pastoring fledgling churches. Those years led to her decision to become a teacher so she could help support churches. Betty graduated from Southwestern Assemblies of God High School in 1950 then studied business education at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma. Betty completed her doctorate in business education at Arizona State University in 1972. Betty met the love of her life, Earl Leslie “Les” Bell at a church youth rally when she was 15. They married at Davis, Oklahoma on June 4, 1955. Les often said that like Jacob of the Old Testament he worked seven years for his Rachel. In 1955 Les completed his studies and was ordained as a minister of the Oklahoma District of the Assemblies of God. At his ordination interview, one of the officials who knew Betty said “We should ordain Betty as well.” Betty maintained her credentials as an ordained minister throughout her life. Les and Betty started churches in Ada, Oklahoma and Holbrook, Arizona. They pastored in Tempe, Arizona and Dolan Springs, Arizona. Betty was a teacher in Oklahoma prior to their move to Arizona in 1959. She taught and served as guidance counselor at Arizona schools in Sanders, Lake Havasu City, Kingman, and was principal at Dolan Springs. In 1990, Betty was hired as the president of Western Bible Institute in Phoenix. She retired from education in 1996 then served as children’s pastor at Mohave Valley Assembly of God Church until 2024. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband. She is survived by her daughter, many cousins, and friends. A private graveside service will be Tuesday, August 11. A celebration of life will be on Betty’s birthday, Saturday, October 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Mohave Valley Assembly of God, 2004 Regents Road, Mohave Valley, Arizona 86440. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Quilt Fund of Mohave Valley Assembly of God.
